Sir Paul McCartney has written to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proposing a National Vegetarian Day in the sub continent.

According to The Press Association, McCartney said the day would be a 'celebration of life' and would promote compassion towards animals, as well as help protect the environment and promote healthy living.

India would be fitting since vegetarianism is widespread in the world's second most populous country.

McCartney has been a vegetarian since the 70s and famously travelled to India with The Beatles towards the end of their career in 1968, popularising the country for people who wanted to go on a spiritual journey.
